Timber Frames

What is a timber frame?

Traditional timber frames are beautiful, jointed wooden structures, made individually with hand tools. They are built from fresh-sawn, or ‘green’ wood and are held together by oak pegs. Typically they include curved wooden ‘braces’ that strengthen the structure and are part of that characteristic timber-framed look.

A more modern aesthetic can be created by simplifying the structure: using metal brackets or bolts to replace the pegs and steel bracing rods instead of wood – see gallery below.

I build with the best wood our area has to offer. 90% of the wood I use – Oak, Larch, Douglas Fir and Chestnut comes from the Dart River Valley.
